Tour Description
DAY 1
The tour will start from Siracusa, we’ll visit Ortigia Island which is the historical center of the city. Here, you will have the opportunity to admire the temple of Apollo, the most ancient greek temple in Sicily built in the VI century B.C., the Duomo Square and its beautiful Cathedral: magnificent representation of an incredible crossroads of different populations and cultures.
Once we leave the island, we will move to the south till we arrive to the famous beach of “Fontane Bianche”, where you can have a regenerating bath. After that, we’ll cycle across Avola until we get to Noto, the capital of sicilian baroque style, where we will admire gorgeous churches and noble palaces of the VIII century.
We will continue our tour cycling along the Natural Reserve of Vendicari until an ancient fishing village where time seems to have stopped: Marzamemi. We’ll move from here to the south-west direction towards the village of Pozzallo, one of the most famous seaside centre of the province of Ragusa, also known for the Cabrera Tower (XV century).
Distance and elevation gain: 98km (about 60 miles) – 806 m (+).
DAY 2
Our second stop is a little shorter as a distance but more complicated because of the elevation gain, moreover, it’s one of the richest stops because of its history, culture and landscape. Once we leave Pozzallo, we will cycle along the coastline in a westward direction to get to another stunning seaside village: Sampieri.
We will approach then from here to the Hyblean Mountains and cycle up to Scicli, beautiful town among hills, famous for its Baroque style and for being the movie set of the popular TV series “Il commissario Montalbano”. Indeed, the famous police station of “Vigata” is right here.
Our tour will continue visiting Modica, full of Churches and monuments, but especially known for the production of chocolate of Aztec origin. Here we suggest a stop to taste the local delights.
Finally, we will arrive to Ragusa Ibla cycling through the valley of Irminio river. This little town is located on a hill, where it dominates the surrounding valley thanks to its little houses and streets among which is possible to admire the Cathedral of Saint George, maximum expression of Hyblean baroque.
Distance and elevation gain: 49 km (about 30 miles) – 980m (+).
DAY 3
The tour will end cycling towards Siracusa, where we’ll complete our round trip. Following the State Road, surrounded by wonderful landscapes and passing near by Saint Rosalia lake, we will arrive to the smallest inhabited center of the province of Ragusa, Giarratana, famous for the production of onions.
After having passed Giarratana, we will move to the province of Siracusa, where we’ll find the pintoresque town of Palazzolo Acreide in the heart of the Hyblean Mountains. To complete the itinerary, we’ll head back to Siracusa, concluding three days of history, culture and nature.
